Friday Morning

Duke Street, Town Centre

‘Where is it?’ Weaver asked as she slowed the car, shifting her focus left then right at the different business names and logos on the buildings on either side of the road.

‘There…’ said DC Leonard, pointing to the right.

Weaver slowed the Astra, flicked her indicator on, and pulled up at the side of the road. Once she’d turned the engine off, they looked to the building on the right. A sign was fixed on the wall next to a large blue door containing three business names.

One was Peter Main Graphic Design. The next name down was Annie’s Flowers. The last one was the one they were looking for.

Cairnfield Developments.

After Henry had told Tanzy about the notes left on Mandy’s car and the numerous phone calls from Mr Cairn, Tanzy ran a check on him, using the first name, which Henry had provided, being Andrew. According to PNC (Police National Computer) he didn’t exist. However that didn’t mean he wasn’t an actual person. The PNC held approximately thirteen million names of people within the UK that have, in some form, committed a crime and have been arrested. These profiles often have further information about the individual including DNA and fingerprints. He then tried the PND (Police National Database), which is a large database of people that have done something that the police have previously investigated but from their findings, no arrests were made.

Andrew Cairn did not exist on either of those.

As soon as DC Leonard and PC Weaver were in the office, Tanzy had sent them on their first task of the day. They were to check out the Duke Street address that Henry had given him from the letters Mr Cairn had previously sent to the planning office.

They stepped out and shut their doors. Considering the time, Duke street was busy, people walking into town dressed smartly, presumably on their way into work.

Most of the parking spaces down the south side were taken up and would, no doubt, be filled before long. It was short stay parking, designed for people who were using the local businesses on that street, although Leonard didn’t get a parking ticket.

The air was cold, just above freezing. Stepping onto the path, they felt a thin layer of frost under their feet and, carefully, made their way to the set of concrete steps up to the building. Leonard, who was wearing black trousers and a white shirt, covered by a dark blue padded fleece, took the lead, pushing open the main door and stepping inside, followed by Weaver, who was wearing her usual uniform.

The hallway was like any other hallway. There was a door to the left, a door beyond that, a door at the end of the hallway and a staircase to the right. Leonard took a few steps and stopped at the first door to the left, with its bright, colourful, funky sign fixed to it. Peter Main Graphic Design.

Leonard passed that, went a few metres down the hall and checked the next door.
